Seth Godin pointed out that it is easier for us to tell our friends that we must give up something and by doing so, they will help remind us. It’s easy for us to tell our friends that we must lose weight. However, it is harder for us to tell our friends about our goals to go up. The traditional wisdom suggests that we should not tell others what we want. If we want a promotion or to be richer, we should not tell our friends as they might be jealous or afraid of our change.
In that case, we need better friends. A common trait among successful people is that they have friends who want them to move up.
