Decision-making is probably the most important skill a leader must possess. There are five different decision-making styles that a leader can use:

  1. Autocratic: the leaders make the decision themselves using the information at hand.
  2. Autocratic: the leaders make the decision themselves by obtaining the information from their subordinates.  The subordinates play the role of giving the information in this process.
  3. Consulting: the leaders share the problem with their subordinates individually, getting their ideas and suggestions without bringing them together. The leaders then make the decision themselves.
  4. Consulting: the leaders share the problem with their subordinates as a group, obtaining their ideas and suggestions.  The leaders then make the decision themselves.
  5. Joint decision making or a group decision procedure: the leaders share the problem with their subordinates.  Together they generate, evaluate, and attempt to reach a consensus on a solution.  The leaders play the role of a chairperson.

There’s no best style. It’s crucial for the leader to know those styles and use one at appropriate time to make a decision. Leaders must also be aware of an eternal truth that the more influence their subordinates have in making a decision, the more they will be motivated to implement it successfully.
